MENDON —

The Board of Selectmen denied Showtime Entertainment’s request for an adult entertainment license yesterday due to a number of concerns including parking and public safety.

Showtime Entertainment LLC applied for the license, which would allow for dancing by performers “without clothes or any covering,” with plans that the building would replace Oak Tree Supply at 49 Milford St.

“There are parking problems with the plans, which is a zoning issue,” said selectmen Chairman David Breen. “It seems like this will be more of a nightclub atmosphere.”

Selectman Michael Ammendolia voiced concern about the owner’s inexperience with the type of business he wants to open.

“I don’t see the connection between a landscaping supply store and this,” he said.

Selectman Lawney Tinio said citizens of Mendon put forth important evidence about public safety.

“The incidence of crime would rise, and we do not have enough officers on duty at night to deal with it,” he said. “Nearby clubs are already demanding for more police.”

Breen said traffic woes would increase if the current plans were followed through with.

“As it is, traffic is congested into Hopedale at 5 p.m.,” he said. “The lack of attractive setting is very important to me.”

The floor plans of the club also did not specify how patrons would be kept away from the stage, Breen said.

Tinio said that while there are no rules dictating when a business should apply for an adult entertainment license, he thought it would be the last step for the business owner, not the first.

“The building has not been approved to be built,” he said. “It just seems out of place to go for the license first.’

However, Tinio said the license could not be denied on that information alone. Tinio made the motion to deny the license on previous unresolved issues.

“A lot of good information came from both sides,” said Breen of the public hearing last week. “But there were some very important items that lacked information.”

A letter of denial will be sent to the business owner.

“It is our duty to protect the citizens of Mendon and all those who come into Mendon,” said Ammendolia.

Deborah Lane, a leader of the anti-adult entertainment group Speak Out Mendon, said she felt like she was heard at the public hearing.

“I think they took into consideration what we said,” she said.

A special Town Meeting is set for Oct. 7, when the town will vote to amend the zoning bylaws for adult entertainment establishments, including a bylaw forbidding a liquor license on property where adult entertainment is permitted due to a citizen petition.

David has announced his candidacy of a second term for Selectman in the Town of Mendon.  Mr. Breen is currently completing a three year term on the Board.

Mr. Breen resides in Mendon with his wife Susan and two children Noah (7) and Paige (5) at 139 Blackstone Street.  Breen is the owner of PiNZ Entertainment in Milford, MA.

Mr. Breen grew up in Hopedale and is a graduate of the class of 1990.  He attended the University of Nebraska and studied communication and broadcasting.  Among his other positions, he still currently hosts a weekend radio show in Boston.

“Having served previously on the Finance Committee and currently finishing a three year term on the Board of Selectman has allowed me to gain the knowledge and experience to continue and lead the Town of Mendon in a proficient manner.”

Mr. Breen went on to say that economic issues will be a critical area of concern that voters are facing over the next few years.  “I have been working hand-in-hand with the Finance Committee to limit the exposure of the taxpayers as much as possible while continuing to maintain the quality of service the residents expect.”

He believes education is and will continue to be a priority for the Town of Mendon.  “Having two children in the school system, I am greatly concerned with education in Mendon.  I will continue working with the school department in assuring the quality of education.”

“I promise, if elected, to listen to all sides of each issue and vote based upon what I believe is best for the town as a whole and not just for any individual or special segment of the population.”

Please vote for David Breen, Selectman,  May 12, 2009.
